Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the ability to question specific calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
